The Defence Ministry of India has cleared a mega project to build six conventional submarines for the Indian Navy at a cost of around Rs 43,000 crore domestically. The submarines will be built under the strategic partnership model that allows domestic defense manufacturers to join hands with leading foreign defense companies to produce high-end military equipment to reduce. India is also eyeing to reduce import dependence from the partner countries. This decision will significantly boost India’s naval prowess and its maritime capabilities.
DAC has also extended the timelines for procuring urgent capital acquisitions under the delegated powers to the armed forces up to August 31, 2021. As China is trying to make its presence in the Indian Ocean region this project will boost India’s capabilities to tackle China’s rapid expansion.
This decision to approve the naval submarine project and the procurement of the military weapons and equipment has been taken at a meeting of the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) chaired by Singh. The DAC is the Defence Ministry’s highest decision-making body on procurement. The project has been named as named ‘P-75 India’.
