Indigenous youths demonstrate against Tripura LoP for allegedly disregarding traditional tribal dress

Tension gripped Dhalai district today as indigenous youths staged a protest against Jitendra Chaudhury, Leader of the Opposition and CPI(M) state secretary, accusing him of disrespecting the ‘Risha,’ the traditional handwoven attire of Tripura’s tribal communities. Around 100 men and women waved black flags and blocked Chaudhury’s convoy for nearly half an hour at Nailaha Bari on the National Highway while he was en route to a party programme. Security forces, including Tripura State Rifles (TSR), intervened to ensure Chaudhury’s safe passage. Protesters shouted slogans demanding an apology, with one stating, “Jitendra Chaudhury has insulted Risha. He must apologize. Otherwise, we will intensify the movement across the state.”

Chaudhury, however, rejected the allegations, calling them politically motivated. He highlighted his long-standing respect for tribal traditions, noting, “When I was the Information and Cultural Affairs Minister, I officially introduced Risha in Tripura. Even today, I keep a Risha along my spine as a symbol of respect for the tribals.” He further accused the BJP of orchestrating the protest to divert attention from governance issues, including delays in village committee elections.

The protest underscores the deep cultural significance of Risha for Tripura’s indigenous communities and the sensitivity surrounding public discourse on tribal customs. Authorities have urged restraint from all parties, while community leaders called for dialogue to prevent further escalation.
