Kapil Sibal, a Rajya Sabha member, attacked two BJP ministers on Saturday for claiming that Congressman Rahul Gandhi insulted OBCs with his “Modi surname” statement in 2019. He claimed that by making such a “absurd allegation,” they were “insulting” the intelligence of the public.
On Friday, Gandhi was expelled from the Lok Sabha, less than 24 hours after a Surat court found him guilty of defamation.
In a defamation lawsuit brought by BJP MLA Purnesh Modi, the court in Gujarat’s Surat condemned Gandhi to two years in prison for his statement, “How come all thieves have Modi as the common surname?” Gandhi was accused of disrespecting OBCs by BJP leaders and Government ministers Dharmendra Pradhan and Anurag Thakur during a press conference on Friday.
