Internet services were suspended and ten people were arrested during a communal altercation in Unakoti, Tripura

At least ten people have been arrested following communal clashes that broke out in Tripura’s Unakoti district, prompting the administration to impose prohibitory orders and suspend internet services to prevent the situation from worsening. Police officials said the situation is now under control and no fresh incidents of violence have been reported so far.The violence erupted on January 10 at Saidarpar village under the Kumarghat sub-division. According to the police, tensions flared during the collection of ‘chanda’ or voluntary subscription for a local temple, which later escalated into clashes between two groups. The incident quickly led to unrest in the area, forcing the authorities to step in to restore order. Superintendent of Police Avinash Kumar Rai said that ten individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident. He added that prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) continue to remain in force in the affected areas. Internet services have also been suspended as a precautionary measure to curb the spread of rumours and misinformation.

To maintain law and order, paramilitary forces have been deployed and are carrying out regular foot patrols in sensitive locations. “The situation is currently peaceful. We are closely monitoring the area, and a decision on easing restrictions will be taken after reviewing the ground situation,” Rai said. The clashes left several people injured. According to official sources, four police personnel and six civilians sustained injuries during the violence. All the injured were provided medical treatment, and their condition is reported to be stable.Meanwhile, the incident has triggered political reactions. Congress legislature party leader Birajit Sinha alleged that he was stopped by the police from visiting the violence-hit area. He said he was on his way to meet affected villagers in Saidarpar when the police prevented him, citing security concerns. Sinha said he strongly protested the move.

Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury criticised the BJP-led state government, alleging that it failed to protect the lives and property of people belonging to the minority community. He also claimed that the chief minister did not respond promptly after the incident came to light. On the other hand, state BJP president Rajib Bhattacharjee condemned the violence and said such incidents disturb communal harmony. He praised the police for acting swiftly and taking action against those allegedly involved in the clashes.
