Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu Arrested Ahead of Potential Presidential Nomination

Ekrem İmamoğlu, the mayor of Istanbul and a prominent figure in Turkey’s opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), was arrested alongside approximately 100 others, including his chief spokesperson and business associates. The detainees face accusations of corruption, embezzlement, bribery, and connections to terrorist organizations. The arrest occurred just days before İmamoğlu’s anticipated nomination as the CHP’s presidential candidate, raising concerns about political motivations behind the detentions. İmamoğlu has publicly declared his commitment to fighting for fundamental rights and freedoms, asserting his innocence against the charges.
