Itanagar Comes to a Standstill Amid Youth Groups’ Demand for Action on ‘Illegal Mosque’ Issue

The Itanagar Capital Region experienced significant tension on Monday due to a 12-hour shutdown enforced by three youth organizations—Indigenous Youth Force of Arunachal (IYFA), Arunachal Pradesh Indigenous Youth Organisation (APIYO), and All Naharlagun Youth Organisation (ANYO). They demanded the demolition of an alleged illegal mosque in Naharlagun and the deportation of suspected illegal migrants, despite the district administration declaring the bandh illegal.

Enhanced police presence was noted, with assurances from Inspector General of Police Chukhu Apa regarding maintaining public order. Mixed reactions arose from civil society, urging reconsideration due to disruptions caused to commuters and businesses. Initially set for November 25, the bandh was postponed after proposed dialogue but resumed due to stalled communications. The closure led to partial business impacts, with concerns about escalating tensions and the uncertainty of the organizations’ demands.
