The first state roadway in Arunachal, the 20-kilometer Itanagar-Jote route, is in terrible shape. In several places, landslides have seriously damaged the road, and in other places, portions of the highway have been washed away. This year’s July monsoon rains caused significant road damage, prompting authorities to restrict the section between Itanagar and Baat hamlet.
Authorities have not done anything to remove the landslide debris close to the highway, despite the harm. It appears that the Public Works Department and the contractor have both given up on the project. On October 31, 2021, construction on the Itanagar-Jote state highway got underway. The Doimukh PWD division is building the highway, and the contractor is Bhimji Private Limited of Gujarat.
With a configuration and carriageway width of 12 and 7 meters, respectively, this road is meant to be Arunachal Pradesh’s first two-lane state highway. The retiring Chief Engineer of PWD, T. Kamsi, who served as the Superintending Engineer at the time, told the media that the project would be a “national standard two-lane highway” when construction began. Sangdupota locals, however, have frequently voiced their displeasure with the work’s quality, claiming that it has been compromised.
