Indian travel aggregator Ixigo has announced its strategic expansion into the European market with the acquisition of a 60 per cent stake in Spain’s second-largest train booking platform, Trenes, for €11.70 million (over ₹125 crore). The move marks a significant step in Ixigo’s global growth strategy and strengthens its presence in the online travel agency (OTA) segment.
Following the deal, Online Travel Solutions, S.L., which operates Trenes, will become a step-down subsidiary of Ixigo. The Spanish platform primarily caters to the domestic train ticket booking market and operates across parts of Southern Europe.
In addition, Ixigo’s board has approved the acquisition of a 45.02 per cent stake in Spain-based Squad as Service, S.L. (Sqaas) for €0.45 million (over ₹4.83 crore). Post-acquisition, Sqaas will function as an associate company. The firm specializes in AI-enabled software and technology-driven solutions, aligning with Ixigo’s focus on innovation and digital transformation.
The total investment of €12.15 million includes non-compete fees and remains subject to regulatory approvals and procedural formalities in Spain.
The acquisitions are expected to enhance Ixigo’s product capabilities, technology integration, and AI leadership, positioning the company to tap into Europe’s growing digital travel ecosystem while expanding its international footprint.
