Kolkata hospital performs advanced keyhole surgery to restore health of liver donor from Agartala

Manipal Hospital EM Bypass has successfully treated a large and complex incisional hernia in a 45-year-old school teacher from Agartala, Tripura, using advanced minimally invasive keyhole surgery. The patient, Nupur Sarkar, had earlier donated a part of her liver to save her husband suffering from liver cirrhosis. While her husband recovered and now lives a stable life, Nupur later developed a painful incisional hernia at the site of her transplant surgery.

Worried about undergoing another major open surgery, she travelled from Agartala to Kolkata in search of a safer option. After evaluation, the team led by Dr. Sumanta Dey, Senior Consultant and HOD – Robotic, Advanced Laparoscopic, Bariatric and Gastrointestinal Surgery, confirmed the condition could be treated laparoscopically. In early December, she underwent Laparoscopic Abdominal Wall Reconstruction, a three-hour procedure performed entirely through keyhole incisions.

The development has been viewed positively in Agartala, where many patients often travel to Kolkata for specialised treatment due to limited availability of advanced laparoscopic procedures locally. Health observers note that awareness of minimally invasive surgery is rising, and more patients from Tripura are now seeking safer and faster-recovery options for complex conditions. Nupur recovered smoothly, began walking within four hours, and was discharged the next day. She later expressed heartfelt gratitude to the medical team. The hospital said the case underlines the growing role of advanced laparoscopic surgery in complex abdominal care.
