The Kuki-Zo Council (KZC) has demanded the imposition of President’s Rule in Manipur, while strongly opposing the Centre’s decision to defer the Census exercise.
KZC spokesperson and secretary (Information and Publicity) Ginza Vualzong said the decision to defer the Census was taken after a high-level meeting convened by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
The KZC said that after what it described as nearly 20 months of unrest and ethnic violence in Manipur, the state was still facing a critical situation. The organisation claimed that the ethnic conflict had increasingly targeted the Kuki-Zo community and that justice, security and dignity remained major concerns.
The council demanded that the government restore peace and ensure the security, dignity and identity of the Kuki-Zo people. It also called for a political arrangement that would guarantee these concerns.
The KZC said it would continue to oppose the exclusion of the Kuki-Zo community from the proposed census exercise and questioned the impartiality of the authorities responsible for conducting the census.
