Leopard Sighting Triggers Advisory in West Kameng; AIMSU Flags Tiger Threat in Lower Dibang Valley

Following confirmed leopard sightings in Arunachal Pradesh’s West Kameng district, the Bomdila Forest Division has issued a public advisory, encouraging residents to exercise caution, especially during vulnerable hours. Observations made by the Dirang Police on January 30 prompted this alert. Residents, particularly those in Dirang Basti, are advised to avoid solitary travel, prefer small groups, and be cautious in poorly lit areas, especially near bushes and isolated patches. Precautions include using bright flashlights at night and avoiding headphones.

The advisory specifically warns children, the elderly, and vulnerable individuals against moving unsupervised near forest boundaries. Parents are asked to escort children to school, while keeping livestock secured at night is emphasized. Reports of suspected leopard attacks should be communicated to the forest department before handling carcasses. In encounters with leopards, the public is instructed to remain calm and not approach or provoke the animal, while sightings must be reported immediately.

Additionally, community members are encouraged to clear dense brush near homes and improve lighting around dark areas. Concerns over safety have grown following repeated tiger sightings in Lower Dibang Valley, prompting the All Idu Mishmi Students’ Union (AIMSU) to express dissatisfaction with the lack of preventive measures. MLA Mutchu Mithi has promised to address these issues with the Forest Minister and consider demands for a criminal inquiry into administrative lapses concerning public safety after a tragic incident involving a Head Constable. The community calls for greater accountability and prompt action to ensure their safety.
