The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday reported moderate rainfall over Mumbai city and suburbs and predicted heavy (64.5 to 115.5 mm) to very heavy rainfall (115.6 to 204.4 mm) at isolated places in the financial capital. . The IMD additionally expected a chance of occasional gusty winds of 40-50 kmph over the coastal city. The IMD had issued a red alert in Mumbai from 1:00 pm on Friday for the next 24 hours.
Severe inundation was recorded in several parts of the metropolis on Wednesday. On Tuesday, floods were seen in Dadar and Sion, while Powai Lake overflowed. Heavy rain lashed the capital on Monday, leading to waterlogging in areas and disruption of the movement of visitors. On Tuesday, a landslide was pronounced in Panchsheel Nagar, Ghatkopar, Mumbai amid heavy rains, collapsing a house. And on Wednesday, another landslide was suggested near Pratapgarh fort in Maharashtra’s Satara district.
Several rivers in the state have reached alert levels. Kundalika river has crossed the warning level and the water level of the Amba, Savitri, Patalganga, Ulhas and Gari rivers are just below the warning level. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has issued extra alerts to all districts and is monitoring the situation. He directed the officials to make all preparations including the evacuation of people living in prone areas. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has deployed 17 teams in areas of Maharashtra that have reported heavy to very heavy rainfall.
