Manipur CM condemns attack on BJP spokesperson’s family

Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has strongly condemned the recent attack on the family of BJP spokesperson Michael Lamjathang Haokip. The incident, which occurred on the night of August 25 in Churachandpur district, involved significant vandalism and arson at Haokip’s residence.

Describing the attack as “an act of cowardice,” CM Singh criticized the targeting of Haokip, a leader of the Thadou community and a prominent BJP spokesperson. “The assault on the family members of Michael Lamjathang, one of the oldest ethnic tribes of Manipur, is a direct challenge to the unity and integrity of the State,” Singh said on the social media platform X.

The Chief Minister assured that “appropriate legal action” will be taken against those responsible for the attack. Reports suggest that armed miscreants struck Haokip’s residence in Phailien village around 11 pm, marking the second such assault amid escalating tensions in the region.

In response to the attack, Haokip expressed his concerns on social media, stating, “We are lifting our prayers and many are standing with us in prayer for the Thadou community.”

This incident follows recent statements by three MLAs from the region advocating for a separate administration within Manipur and urging for recognition of their tribes by specific names rather than the collective term “Kuki-Zo.”
