Meghalaya’s UDP names 4 new candidates for upcoming district council polls

The United Democratic Party (UDP) has unveiled its third list of candidates for the upcoming elections to the Khasi Hills and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Councils, scheduled for February 21. The announcement marks a key step in the party’s preparations for these critical polls. The four candidates named in the latest list are Synshar Kupar Roy Lyngdoh Thabah, Anthony Khongwang, Lee Trevor S. Bareh, and Mewan Pasi. The declaration was made during a press briefing held at the UDP’s party headquarters, underscoring the party’s focus on ensuring strong representation across constituencies.

The elections, which play a vital role in determining the governance of Meghalaya’s tribal regions, are being keenly watched for their impact on local administration and regional dynamics. The UDP has been actively strategizing to consolidate its position and strengthen its influence within the councils. This announcement follows the party’s December declaration of 35 candidates, bringing it closer to finalizing its lineup. Party insiders indicate that the final list will aim to strike a balance between experienced leaders and fresh faces, ensuring robust competition in all constituencies.

With the Autonomous District Councils serving as a critical mechanism for preserving and promoting the rights of tribal communities, the elections hold significant weight in shaping the region’s socio-political landscape.
