Merging of small madrasas with large one, Assam

The threat of radicalization from madrassas in Assam has become a major issue. Henceforth, to reduce the threat, the Assam government decided to merge the small madrasas with the big madrasas.

There will be only one madrasa within three kilometers and those with 50 or fewer students will be merged with larger madrasas in the vicinity.

According to sources, the move came after the state police busted nine modules of terror outfits Ansarul Bangla Team (ABT) and Al Qaeda in Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) and arrested 53 suspected terrorists last year.

DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahant said the modules the police had leaked were typical of madrassas or mosques being used by radicalized youth.

“Not all madrassas are doing it (extremism), but there is evidence of it. There really is a threat. In fact, since Assam has a huge Muslim population, they are making Assam a soft target,” the DGP added.
