Mizoram has seen an increase in cybercrime this year, with the state reporting losses of more over 8 crore rupees. Mizoram Police classified over 80% of crimes as financial scams between January and September 2024, with many involving fraudulent investment schemes and impersonation fraud. Mizoram Police recently held a public awareness session, during which officials revealed the staggering losses caused by cyber crime.

From January to September, cybercriminals stole Rs. 8,00,31,849.35 from victims in Mizoram. The greatest monthly loss was reported in July at Rs. 2.57 crore, with subsequent months ranging from Rs. 24 lakh to more than Rs. 1 crore. The law enforcement authorities explained that recovering monies from cyber scams remains difficult, with just approximately 10% of stolen funds successfully retrieved.

The army scam is one of the most prevalent scams, in which fraudsters pose as military officials in order to gain victims’ trust and persuade them to transfer money. According to police investigations, many cyber-criminals operate from outside the state, primarily in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand. The Mizoram Police Department urged the people to be on the lookout for internet fraud, be wary of unsolicited offers, and report any suspicious activity immediately.
