Mizoram Assembly clears resolution for CBI investigation into alleged irregularities in Lengpui land deal

The Mizoram Legislative Assembly has unanimously passed a private member’s resolution calling for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the contentious Lengpui land acquisition deal. Proposed by Mizo National Front (MNF) legislator R Lalthangliana, the resolution underwent minor wording modifications following discussions in the House. Lalthangliana highlighted public concerns surrounding the land acquisition associated with a proposed Indian Air Force project in Lengpui, alleging significant irregularities. He specifically pointed out suspicions regarding a substantial payment to an individual claimed to lack ownership of the land involved. The legislator indicated that the transaction raised speculation of possible kickbacks to politicians and influential officials at both state and central government levels. Notably, Lalthangliana disclosed financial transactions relating to the deal, including over Rs. 117.90 crore paid to Henry Lalremsanga Hlawnmual and further disbursements to Rohmingliana, who received considerable amounts in connection with the land acquisition. He raised concerns about a special power of attorney between Rohmingliana and Hlawnmual, alleging it facilitated backdoor dealings. In response, Chief Minister Lalduhoma denied the allegations against the current administration, attributing the responsibility for the acquisition procedures to the previous MNF government. He asserted that most groundwork had been completed under the former government’s tenure, with the current administration merely finalizing the remaining formalities. Following extensive debate, both ruling and opposition members concurred on adopting the resolution, which calls for a CBI investigation into the matter.
