The Election Commission of Mizoram is set to announce its decision on Chief Minister Lalduhoma’s alleged violation of the model code of conduct on February 10, just days ahead of the February 12 village council elections. The State Election Commission (SEC) had issued a show-cause notice to the Chief Minister following a complaint filed by the opposition Mizo National Front (MNF). The SEC confirmed that Lalduhoma submitted his response on February 9, while a detailed report from the Kolasib district election officer has also been reviewed. MNF general secretary J Rosangpuia, in a complaint dated February 6, accused the Chief Minister of announcing new government policies during a meeting with Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) leaders in Kolasib’s Tuirial west block. The party also alleged that a photograph from the meeting, reportedly released by the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), constituted a violation of the model code of conduct.
This is not the first instance of an election code violation in the state. Earlier, PWD Minister Vanlalhlana was issued a notice for a similar breach but was later pardoned after submitting an apology. The upcoming elections will see voters electing representatives for 544 village councils across nine districts, excluding three autonomous district councils in Siaha and Lawngtlai. Additionally, 111 local councils under Aizawl Municipal Corporation and Lunglei Municipal Council will also go to the polls. A total of 6,829 candidates are in the fray for village councils, while 2,076 are contesting local council seats.
Polling will take place on February 12, with counting set to begin at 7 PM or immediately after voting concludes. The Election Commission’s ruling on the Chief Minister’s case could have significant political implications as the state heads to the polls.
