Mizoram has established its first Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) Department at Zoram Medical College & Hospital (ZMCH), with support from SBI Funds Management Ltd (SBIFML) in partnership with Doctors For You (DFY), to expand access to specialised cardiac treatment in the state.
The initiative also includes the upgradation of the hospital’s Intensive Cardiac Care Unit (ICCU). Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma inaugurated the CTVS unit and upgraded ICCU at ZMCH in Aizawl on October 14.
The CTVS Department recorded 37 cases between June and September 2026, including nine in June, five in July, 13 in August and 10 in September, highlighting the demand for specialised surgical services. ZMCH has 470 general beds and 38 ICU beds, besides major and minor operation theatres and casualty facilities, and provides round-the-clock services.
The initiative is expected to benefit economically weaker and underserved patients who often travel outside Mizoram for specialised cardiac treatment, helping reduce travel-related expenses and access barriers.
In Aizawl, the expansion of advanced cardiac services could reduce the need for patients to seek treatment in other cities, potentially easing financial pressure on families and supporting the local healthcare ecosystem.
Debasish Mishra, managing director and CEO of SBI Funds Management Ltd, said the organisation remained committed to expanding access to essential healthcare and making advanced treatment available closer to patients’ homes.
