The Mizoram government is intensifying its efforts against the smuggling of areca nuts from Myanmar, which has caused significant economic harm to local farmers and contributed to the growth of unregulated black money. Home Minister K Sapdanga reported that from 2019 to 2025, there were 468 smuggling cases and 292 arrests related to this issue. The illegal nuts, which evade import duties and taxes, are sold at lower prices, damaging local growers. The government reaffirms a “zero-tolerance” approach, promising strict measures and increased border surveillance, and warns that all involved in the trade, including officials, will be held accountable.
