Mizoram Households Set to Receive Piped Natural Gas by 2027

Piped natural gas will soon be available to households in Mizoram, with the Tripura–Mizoram gas pipeline project expected to be completed by 2027. Currently, over 20% of the 119.5-kilometre pipeline has been installed, showing significant progress that will enhance energy access throughout the state, especially in its capital, Aizawl. A recent meeting between a delegation from Indradhanush Gas Grid Limited (IGGL), the project’s implementing company, and Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma highlighted the current status and the challenges faced, including issues concerning terrain, logistics, and coordination.

The pipeline will start at the Panisagar Receiving Terminal in Tripura and will traverse several locations including Kanhmun, Zawlnuam, Kawrthah, Tuidam, and Darlak, eventually reaching near Mamit in Mizoram. It will then proceed to Lengte and conclude at the proposed Sihhmui Receiving Terminal, situated approximately 21 kilometres from Aizawl. Once operational, domestic gas connections in Aizawl will be managed by the Tripura Natural Gas Corporation Limited.

Importantly, this project is part of the North East Natural Gas Pipeline Grid initiative, which aims to expand clean energy infrastructure across the northeastern region of India. The section from Panisagar to Sihhmui is part of the project’s second phase, involving a total of 723 kilometres of pipeline extending from Guwahati to Aizawl via Agartala. This initiative underscores a significant step towards enhancing natural gas accessibility and promoting sustainable energy practices in the region.
