Mizoram introduces border pass for Myanmar border residents

Security has been strengthened along the 510-km Mizoram-Myanmar border following directives from the Central Government, introducing new regulations for cross-border movement. Residents within 10 kilometers of the unfenced border now require a border pass for visits to either side. The border pass, valid for seven days, is issued to Indian and Myanmarese citizens upon presenting documents verifying their residency within the 10-km zone. This initiative, effective from December 31, involves state police, Assam Rifles, and health officials managing entry and exit points.

Champhai, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Hnahthial, Saitual, and Serchhip districts, which share borders with Myanmar’s Chin state, are implementing the measures. Crossing points like Zokhawthar and Hnahlan are operational Monday to Saturday, from 6 AM to 3:30 PM.

Key Features of the Border Pass

– Eligibility: Residents within 10 km of the border.

– Validity: Seven days; must be returned at the same crossing point.

– Issuance: Documents certified by local authorities or police stations.

– Minors: Accompanied by parents; details of up to three children included per pass.

The Assam Rifles, tasked with border security, will inspect documents, conduct health checks, and upload data to the Indo-Myanmar Border portal before issuing a pass featuring biometrics, a photograph, and a QR code. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) reduced the free movement regime (FMR) range from 16 km to 10 km, with stricter enforcement. Violators face legal consequences.
