The Mizoram government plans to privatise or outsource seven small hydel power projects due to high maintenance costs, as announced by Chief Minister Lalduhoma during the inauguration of a solar power plant. This move faces opposition from the Congress party, which argues that it undermines the state’s interests, as many hydel projects are revenue-generating. Currently, Mizoram hosts 14 hydroelectric projects totaling over 100 MW, with future plans to develop additional projects, including a 24 MW project on the Tuirini river and a 132 MW project on the Tuivai river, aimed at enhancing energy self-sufficiency. The state aims for six new solar parks with a combined capacity of 66 MW, while currently relying on electricity imports and experiencing a 7.6% annual demand increase. The Zoram People’s Movement government has also committed to keeping power tariffs unchanged for five years to support consumers.
