Mizoram authorities have arrested four individuals, including three Myanmar nationals and one Assam resident, in two separate operations for allegedly smuggling Methamphetamine tablets and heroin, officials confirmed on Wednesday. In a joint operation on February 5, Mizoram Excise & Narcotics Department and Assam Rifles personnel seized 20,200 Methamphetamine tablets, weighing 2.2 kg, in Zote Tiau village of Champhai district, bordering Myanmar.
The accused, identified as Sumlamthang (35) and Zamngaihno (36), both from Myanmar’s Chin state, were apprehended for allegedly smuggling the banned stimulant from across the border. Methamphetamine, commonly referred to as the ‘crazy drug’, is a highly addictive substance prohibited in India. In another operation on the same day, authorities recovered 246 grams of heroin in Khatla, near Aizawl, leading to the arrest of Kapchina (34) from Myanmar’s Khawmawi village and Naman Uddin (32) from Eraligool village in Assam’s Karimganj district. Two vehicles used in trafficking the narcotics were also seized.
All four accused have been booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, and were presented before district courts in Champhai and Aizawl. They have been remanded to judicial custody for 14 days as further investigations continue.
