Households in Mizoram will receive piped natural gas (PNG) by the first half of 2028, as part of the Centre’s energy expansion programme. The 119.5-km gas pipeline, laid by Indradhanush Gas Grid Limited (IGGL) under the Northeast Natural Gas Pipeline project, has reached 45% completion and is set to be finished by December 2027. This pipeline will connect Mizoram to the national gas grid, significantly enhancing the state’s energy infrastructure. Initially, the capital city Aizawl and Mamit are expected to benefit from the new distribution network. Mizoram’s Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister, B. Lalchhanzova, stated that the pipeline segment to Sihhmui in Tripura is on schedule for completion by March 2027. Upon completion, Tripura Natural Gas Company Ltd (TNGCL) will commence developing a city gas distribution network to supply PNG to households in Aizawl and Mamit. Once IGGL finalizes the pipeline installation by March 2027, TNGCL will start connecting domestic and commercial consumers, with the entire project anticipated to be operational by early 2028. Lalchhanzova highlighted that Tripura has utilized PNG for over 30 years, currently servicing more than 60,000 consumers, which includes hotels and restaurants. He recently evaluated gas infrastructure in Agartala to understand its operational model better.
