Mizoram Women’s Commission steps in after video of volent asault goes viral

In response to a viral video showing the brutal public assault of a woman, the Mizoram State Commission for Women (MSCW) has filed a suo moto notice and demanded immediate legal action. The disturbing incident, which occurred in broad daylight on a public road, involved a 22-year-old man, identified as Lalnunfela from Aizawl’s Bethlehem locality, violently kicking and slapping the woman near a parked scooter.

The disturbing footage, which spread rapidly online, led the victim’s mother to recognize her daughter, prompting her to report the assault. In response, authorities have registered two cases: MSCW Case No. 80/2024 under the Mizoram State Commission for Women Act and a criminal case (No. 117/2024) at the Kulikawn Police Station. Despite efforts by the police, both the suspect and the victim have remained unreachable, as their phones have been switched off.

Law enforcement is actively pursuing leads to trace their whereabouts on the outskirts of Aizawl. The Women’s Commission has demanded a detailed report from the police within seven days, focusing on the victim’s medical needs and the appropriateness of legal actions. The commission has also called for a review of the police’s night patrol activities during the festive season to ensure timely intervention in such cases. Authorities are working urgently to address the situation and ensure justice for the victim.
