The Mizoram government is set to introduce prepaid smart meters under the Centre’s Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), aiming to enhance electricity distribution and efficiency. The state’s power and electricity department signed an agreement with Advance Metering Infrastructure Service Provider (AMISP) on November 21 for the project. Supported by central funding exceeding ₹170 crore, the initiative will cover the installation of smart meters for 2,89,383 consumers.
The Letter of Award for the project was issued on October 14, marking the start of a 27-month timeline for installation. The operation and maintenance phase will extend for an additional 93 months, ensuring long-term functionality. Officials stated that the prepaid system will provide consumers with better control over electricity usage while reducing losses for the electricity department.
This smart metering initiative is a crucial step in aligning Mizoram with national goals for modernized and efficient power distribution, benefiting both consumers and the state’s power infrastructure.
