Chief Minister Lalduhoma on December 16 unveiled the Mizoram Chief Minister’s Rubber Mission, an ambitious initiative aimed at transforming the state’s agricultural sector. The launch event, held at Dawrpui Multipurpose Hall in Aizawl, was attended by Minister for Land Resources, Soil & Water Conservation, Pu Lalthansanga, as the guest of honour. Speaking at the event, CM Lalduhoma acknowledged the challenges Mizoram’s farmers have faced with past government-supported crop initiatives, which often led to disillusionment. He emphasized the economic and environmental benefits of rubber cultivation, calling it a sustainable and high-demand global crop with the potential to generate consistent income for farmers.
The Rubber Mission, scheduled to begin in the 2025-26 financial year, aims to cultivate 1,000 hectares annually, eventually covering 4,000 hectares over four years. The program is expected to benefit 1,000 farmers each year, offering them a reliable livelihood. Key preparatory measures included visits by officials to Tripura, Kerala, and the Rubber Board of India to gain insights into best practices. Pu Lalthansanga highlighted that the mission was developed in consultation with Dr. Sawar Dhanania, Chairman of the Rubber Board of India, ensuring a robust framework for success.
The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has sanctioned Rs 27.98 crore for the mission’s initial phase, which will span seven districts in Mizoram. Pankaja Borah, General Manager of NABARD’s Mizoram Regional Office, handed over the sanction letter during the event.
