The State Election Commissioner, H. Lalthlangliana, announced on Monday that the schedule for the upcoming elections to the Sinlung Hills Council (SHC) in Mizoram will be unveiled on October 3. This announcement follows the release of the final electoral rolls for the polls. According to the rolls, there are a total of 23,789 voters, including 11,914 female voters, marking a slight increase of 39 female voters over male voters. This figure represents a notable rise from the 20,914 voters recorded during the last council elections in November 2019. The SHC encompasses 12 constituencies across 31 villages in the Hmar-dominated northeastern region of Mizoram, covering three assembly constituencies in Aizawl, Kolasib, and Saitual districts.
A leader from the Hmar People’s Convention (HPC) announced a strategic alliance with the ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) for the upcoming elections. The two parties have reached a seat-sharing agreement, with ZPM set to contest in eight constituencies and HPC in four. In the previous council elections held in November 2019, the MNF-HPC alliance secured 10 seats, while two seats went to Independent candidates. However, the political landscape has shifted in the last five years, with the ZPM-HPC alliance currently in power.
Established on July 9, 2018, following a peace accord between the Mizoram government and the former underground Hmar People’s Convention (Democratic) on April 2, the SHC consists of 12 elected members and two nominated seats, led by a Chief Executive Member (CEM).
