Monsoon Flu virus increases the risk of hospitalisation for children and the elderly

There are four different types of viruses that can cause Influenza, commonly called flu. These circulate throughout the year but spread faster during the monsoons and winter because of temperature fluctuations. Children and elderly individuals may contract flu from various viruses, affecting the nose, throat, and lungs, leading to hospitalization, death, and complications like bacterial pneumonia and ear and sinus infections.

The 4-in-1 flu vaccination is recommended for children aged 6 months to 5 years and elderly above 50 years to prevent complications. The flu virus can spread quickly, causing symptoms like cough, fever, chills, sore throat, tiredness, muscle ache, and headache. It spreads through respiratory droplets, surfaces like doors, desks, books, and toys, and schools and playgrounds are common locations for transmission. The Indian Academy of Paediatrics and World Health Organization recommend annual vaccinations to protect against the flu virus.

Speaking about the 4-in-1 flu vaccination, Dr. Devdeep Mukherjee, Mission Hospital, said, “Parents should consult their doctor for medical advice and regarding annual 4-in-1 flu vaccination for protecting their children against flu along with maintaining hygiene and social distancing.”
