Backing Uttarakhand Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawat’s controversial remarks on ripped jeans, Madhya Pradesh Tourism and Culture Minister Usha Thakur said that wearing torn clothes was a ‘bad omen in Indian culture’.
She said that wearing ripped jeans or clothes was against the pristine Indian culture and traditions.
“You must have seen that if our grandmother used to see any torn clothes, she would tell us to reject or not wear them anymore. In Indian culture, torn clothes are considered a bad omen. Hence, the well-cultured families that we have here and those who live the traditional lifestyle do not like these kinds of clothes,” India Today quoted Thakur as saying.
Last week, Tirath Singh Rawat said that women wearing ripped jeans send wrong message to society and children. Rawat wondered what values they would impart to their children, prompting a backlash from Opposition parties.
Tirath Singh Rawat said due to a lack of values, youngsters these days follow strange fashion trends and consider themselves to be big shots after wearing jeans ripped at the knees, while women also follow such trends.
Rawat faced harsh criticism from all sides with Opposition parties even questioning the BJP’s judgment over his appointment. Celebrities and several women too slammed Rawat for his remarks and flooded social media with photos of them wearing ripped jeans.
Meanwhile, the opposition Congress flayed the remarks from the MP cabinet minister as well as Uttarakhand CM. Senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal said he was “shocked’ by the CM’s statement, while Uttarakhand Congress chief Pritam Singh termed Rawat’s remarks “shameful’ and demanded that he apologise to women. RJD leader Rabri Devi also blasted the BJP for trying to define identity and culture through one’s clothes.
