No cultivation ban, K. Vanlalvena assures farmers

Mizoram’s lone Rajya Sabha MP, K. Vanlalvena, has criticized Chief Minister Lalduhoma for creating unnecessary panic among arecanut growers in the state. Addressing the media on Wednesday, Vanlalvena assured farmers that the Central Government has not issued any order halting the cultivation of arecanuts in Mizoram.

Vanlalvena expressed frustration over the Chief Minister’s recent statement in the Assembly, where Lalduhoma claimed that the Indian Government had imposed a ban on arecanut cultivation in the state. “This has caused unnecessary fear among the farmers,” Vanlalvena stated.

The MP clarified that he personally reached out to Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Kumar on September 13, who confirmed that no such ban had been placed. Additionally, Commissioner of Horticulture Prabhat Kumar also reassured Vanlalvena on September 20 that no central order prohibiting arecanut cultivation exists.
