Organic Farming Area in Tripura Expands to 26,000 Hectares, Says Minister

Tripura State Agriculture Department is laying increased emphasis on organic farming in the state. “Earlier, organic cultivation was carried out on nearly 2000 hectares of land, which has now expanded to around 26,000 hectares,” said Agriculture Minister Ratan Lal Nath while inaugurating the State Level Kisan Mela 2025-26 and conferment of the State and District Level Best Farmers Awards in Agartala on Saturday. The Minister said farmers have played an important role in increasing the state’s GSDP, with a significant portion of the contribution coming from the agriculture sector. He informed that Tripura has achieved self-sufficiency in food grains in three districts of the state.

“Food grain production in Tripura has increased by 12 percent this year compared to the previous year, reflecting the growing strength of the agriculture sector and rising participation of youths in farming activities,” the Minister said. “Under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, about 15,20,000 farmers have been covered,” Nath said. He further informed that in the last seven years, the state government has spent Rs 461 crore for the development of agricultural markets across the state. Officials from the Agriculture Department and farmers from different districts were present at the programme.
