India currently has 40.6 million stunted children under five, a significant number compared to the global childhood stunting burden of 149 million children under five. This lag in growth can be linked to lifestyle factors such as dietary habits and physical activity, leading to malnutrition such as stunting, underweight, and wasting. Nutritional intervention plays a pivotal role in promoting optimal growth and development, with the absorption of nutrients being essential for a child’s catch-up growth and stronger foundation.
Stunting can cause poor cognition, educational achievement, lost productivity, and negative impacts on overall health. Nutrient deficiencies can lead to immune deficiencies, compromised cognitive function, behavioral problems, diminished bone health, and decreased muscle mass. Protein, vitamins, and minerals are crucial for a child’s growth, but only up to 50% of nutrients can be absorbed from the food a child eats. Nutritional supplements can play a dual role, either bridging nutritional gaps or enhancing the absorption of vital vitamins and minerals from regular food consumption.
Dr. Subhasis Roy, a consultant pediatrician at Columbia Asia Hospital, states that 33.8 percent of children under 5 are stunted, and 69% are anemic. To support healthy growth, children need a balanced diet of vegetables, fruits, protein, dairy, and cereals. Parents should provide a balanced diet that includes these nutrients for holistic growth.
