Parliamentary panel to meet Twitter, IT Ministry officials today

Twitter representatives on Friday appeared before a parliamentary panel that had called the social media giant to discuss the issue of safeguarding citizens’ rights and preventing misuse of online platforms.

The committee, led by Shashi Tharoor, senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP from Thiruvananthapuram, was to question the Twitter representatives and officials of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeiTY) on steps taken by the former to prevent people from misusing social media.

The meeting was to hear the opinions of Twitter representatives and discuss safeguarding each citizen’s rights. The panel also aims to find ways of stopping the exploitation of social media or online news media platforms. Discussions on emphasising the security of women in the digital space will take place as well.

Top officials of Twitter are being called at a time when the government has clashed with the American social media giant over a range of issues including its stand on the new IT rules.

“We appreciate opportunity to share our views before Standing Committee on IT. Twitter stands prepared to work with the Committee on important work of safeguarding citizens’ rights online in line with our principles of transparency, freedom of expression, and privacy,” Twitter spokesperson said after the meeting, as per ANI report.
