PM Narendra Modi attend the BIMSTEC Summit

The Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi is attending the 5th BIMSTEC Summit on 30th March. The ‘Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC)’ is a regional multilateral organisation.

PM Narendra Modi shared on the twitter that:

The Summit Meeting is being held in virtual mode. It will be hosted by the current BIMSTEC chair Sri Lanka. Meetings of BIMSTEC Senior Officials took place on 28th March. It was followed by meetings of the BIMSTEC Foreign Ministers (BMM) on 29th March to prepare for the Summit.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar concluded a ‘productive and congenial’ BIMSTEC Ministerial Meeting. Jaishankar participated in the 18th BIMSTEC Ministerial Meeting in Colombo. He emphasized the grouping’s commitment to intensify and expand areas of cooperation especially connectivity, energy and maritime ties among the member countries.

He retwitted:

The Ministry of External (MEA) said that, “All BIMSTEC members are facing the Covid pandemic related challenges and also the uncertainties within the international system. It imparts greater urgency to the goal of taking BIMSTEC technical and economic cooperation to the next level. It is expected to be the main subject of deliberations by Leaders at the Summit.”

The leaders are also expected to discuss the establishment of basic institutional structures and mechanisms of the group.
