Police in Tripura turn over the bodies of three Bangladeshis who were slain in a mob attack

Tripura Police have officially handed over the bodies of three Bangladeshi nationals who were lynched by a mob on suspicion of cattle theft in the Vidyabill area of Khowai district on October 15. The tragic incident has raised concerns about cross-border crimes and mob violence in the India-Bangladesh border region. According to police officials, a case was registered at the Champahoar Police Station following the recovery of the three bodies. “During investigation, it was confirmed that the deceased were Bangladeshi citizens. After the post-mortem examination, the bodies were handed over to the Bangladesh Police and the Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) through the Paharmura border point,” said an official statement.

Authorities reported that the three men allegedly attempted to steal cattle from a local village and, when confronted, attacked residents with sharp weapons, leaving two villagers seriously injured. The enraged villagers retaliated, resulting in the death of all three on the spot. The handover of the bodies was conducted in the presence of senior officials from both countries. On the Indian side, the ceremony was attended by Assistant Commandant of the 104th BSF Battalion Kundan Kumar, Officer-in-Charge of Khowai Police Station Krishna Dhan Sarkar, Officer-in-Charge of Champahoar Police Station Dilip Kumar Debbarma, and the Additional Superintendent of Police. Representing Bangladesh were Commandant of the 55th Battalion BGB Company Abul Khair and Officer-in-Charge of Chunarughat Police Station Zahidul Islam.

The deceased were identified as Jewel Mia, Pandit Mia, and Sajal Mia, all residents of Bangladesh. Following the incident, border forces on both sides have stepped up surveillance and joint coordination to prevent further tensions and maintain peace along the sensitive border areas.
