Police in Tripura have arrested four persons, including a Bangladeshi national, in connection with an alleged abduction and ransom demand case in Agartala, officials said on Monday.The accused have been identified as Rabil Miah, Iqbal Hossain, Jakir Hossain and Nishab Miah. According to police, Nishab Miah is a Bangladeshi national and a separate case has been registered against him for illegally entering India. Officials said the incident took place on May 16 in Agartala city. Investigators alleged that a person was abducted from the Office Lane area and later threatened during captivity. The victim was subsequently released, but the accused allegedly demanded ransom from him.
Additional Public Prosecutor Alak Datta said the accused were produced before a court under different sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita related to abduction, criminal conspiracy and intimidation. Police sought a three-day remand for further investigation into the case. Addressing a press conference at West Agartala Police Station, Sadar Sub-Divisional Police Officer Debaprasad Roy said a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed immediately after the incident came to light. The SIT is being headed by Officer-in-Charge of West Police Station Rana Chatterjee.
Police said the alleged abduction took place from in front of the court complex, considered one of the busiest and most crowded areas in Agartala. Preliminary investigation indicated that six to seven people were involved in carrying out the operation. Investigators said the accused allegedly used a white Bolero vehicle along with a scooter during the incident. Police have already seized the scooter believed to have been used in the operation.
