The flood situation in Assam showed signs of improvement on Sunday, but over 1.35 lakh people in five districts continue to remain affected by the deluge. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), three more deaths were reported from Sivasagar district, taking the total number of flood-related fatalities in the state this year to 85.
The affected districts include Charaideo, Dhemaji, Golaghat, Jorhat and Sivasagar. Sivasagar remains the worst-hit district, with more than 55,000 people affected, followed by Charaideo and Jorhat. The floods have submerged around 335 villages and damaged more than 15,000 hectares of agricultural land.
Authorities are currently operating 54 relief camps and relief distribution centres across the affected areas, providing shelter and assistance to nearly 13,800 people. The Dhansiri river at Numaligarh continues to flow above the danger level, adding to concerns in vulnerable areas.
Meanwhile, political discussions over flood management have intensified, with the Assam Congress alleging shortcomings in the utilisation of flood relief funds and demanding greater accountability from the state government. The party also raised concerns over alleged environmental issues and sought long-term measures to address recurring floods.
The Centre has approved the advance release of funds from the State Disaster Response Fund to support flood-affected states during the ongoing monsoon season. The Assam administration continues relief and rescue operations while monitoring river levels and the situation in affected districts.
