Polling ends in Mizoram’s 534 village councils and 110 local councils

Polling for 534 Village Councils (VC) and 110 Local Councils (LC) across Mizoram concluded peacefully on Wednesday, according to State Election Commissioner H. Lalthlangliana. Voting, which began at 7 a.m., continued beyond the scheduled 4 p.m. deadline.

The State Election Commission (SEC) reported a 64.76% voter turnout in VC polls and 33.24% in LC elections by 8:30 p.m., with final numbers expected to rise. Elections were not held in nine VCs where candidates, mostly from the ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), were declared elected unopposed. Polling in Lalnutui VC (Lunglei district) and Lawipu LC (Aizawl Municipal Corporation) has been rescheduled due to candidate deaths.

Mizoram has 544 VCs and 111 LCs, excluding three autonomous district councils. The SEC noted 4,41,431 registered voters for VCs and 2,03,837 voters for LCs, with significant seats reserved for women—613 out of 2,416 VC seats and 195 out of 575 LC seats. A total of 6,828 candidates contested the VC elections, while 2,076 candidates vied for LC seats. Counting of votes had not begun at the time of reporting.
