Nine cities from the region, including Khowai in Tripura, have been conferred the Swachh Shehar award under the Swachh Survekshan 2024–25. The award, presented by President Droupadi Murmu at Vigyan Bhawan, recognises urban centres making significant strides in sanitation and cleanliness.
The cities honoured are Jairampur (Arunachal Pradesh), North Lakhimpur and Guwahati (Assam), Jiribam (Manipur), Shillong (Meghalaya), Lunglei (Mizoram), Jalukie (Nagaland), Mangan (Sikkim), and Khowai (Tripura).
Khowai received the State-Level Promising City award, accepted by Tripura’s Social Welfare and Social Education Minister Tinku Roy. “This is a proud chapter not only for Khowai city but for the entire state of Tripura,” Roy stated, calling the recognition a milestone in the state’s mission for a clean and green future.
This year’s Swachh Survekshan introduced a more inclusive evaluation model, ensuring fair assessment across small and large cities. Under the ‘One City, One Award’ principle, the top-performing city from each state was honoured as a Promising Swachh Shehar.
