A day after receiving a criminal defamation verdict from a Surat court, Congress leader and Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi was disqualified from the Lok Sabha. According to the provisions of Section 8 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 and Article 102 (1)(e) of the Constitution, Mr. Gandhi is ineligible to serve as a member of the Lok Sabha as of the date of his conviction, according to a notification from the lower house signed by Secretary General Utpal Kumar Singh. For his alleged remark during the 2019 parliamentary election campaign that “why all robbers have Modi surname,” Mr. Gandhi received a two-year prison term.
