Regulatory reforms key to India’s tobacco industry growth: PMI’s Frederic De Wilde

India’s tobacco industry, with 300 million users, stands at a critical juncture where regulatory modernization could drive economic growth and public health benefits. Speaking at the Times Group ET NOW Global Business Summit 2025, Frederic De Wilde, President SSEA, CIS & MEA Region at Philip Morris International (PMI), highlighted the need for science-backed policies to introduce less harmful alternatives.

De Wilde emphasized that regulatory clarity has accelerated economic transformation in sectors like renewable energy and digital finance. He pointed to Japan, where alternative products reduced cigarette sales by 50%, and Sweden, which boasts Europe’s lowest smoking rate and lung cancer incidence due to progressive regulations. He urged India to adopt similar measures to attract investments and foster innovation.

PMI also reiterated its commitment to sustainability by supporting Indian tobacco farmers through sustainable agricultural practices. The company looks forward to working with policymakers to align innovation with India’s economic and public health priorities.
