Rev. R Vanlalnghaka inaugurates Council of Churches in Aizawl”

The Council of Churches in Mizoram (CCM) was officially launched on October 27, marking the first initiative of its kind in the state’s 130-year Christian history since its introduction in 1894. Formed by eight major churches, including the Mizoram Presbyterian Church (MPC), Baptist Church of Mizoram (BCM), and the Evangelical Church of Maraland, the council aims to promote unity and harmony among various Christian denominations in Mizoram. The CCM was inaugurated by Rev. R Vanlalnghaka, the Synod moderator of the Mizoram Presbyterian Church, during a conference held at the Presbyterian Church in Aizawl’s Mission Veng locality.

The event saw attendance from Chief Minister Lalduhoma, cabinet ministers, and legislators from both the ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) and opposition parties, including the MNF, Congress, and BJP. During the business session, over 500 delegates from different churches came together to adopt the council’s constitution and approve the appointment of seven office bearers. The delegates also sanctioned an interim budget of Rs 32.4 lakh. Rev. Dr. R Lalbiakliana, general secretary of BCM, was appointed as president, while Rev.

Dr. Lalhmangaiha from MPC will serve as the general secretary. The council will operate its temporary office from the Synod Convention Centre in Aizawl. Lalbiakliana emphasized the council’s primary goal: to bridge divides and foster common ground among churches, encouraging members to set aside doctrinal differences. He highlighted the council’s commitment to uniting diverse churches in Mizoram to enhance societal reform and assist the government in promoting good governance.
