Sangrur Lok Sabha bypolls continued till 1 pm

Over 22 percent polling was recorded till 1 pm in Punjab’s Sangaru Lok Sabha seat by-election on Thursday.

Voting began for the parliamentary seat at 8 am. the ruling AAP faces its first test of popularity after its impressive performance in the assembly elections before this year.

According to figures available by the Election Commission at 1 pm, the voting percentage was 22.21.

Amidst tight security, polling will continue till 6 pm, officials said, with counting to be done on June 26.

There are 15,69,240 eligible voters – 8,30,056 men, 7,39,140 women and 44 from the Hijra community – in the Sangur parliamentary constituency. Sixteen candidates including three women are contesting.

Prominent among those who voted were Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Cheema and AAP candidate Gurmail Singh. Congress candidate Dalvir Singh Goldi and BJP candidate Kewal Singh Dhillon also voted.
