Assam’s district commissioners have gathered in Jorhat for a two-day conference to review development and governance priorities across the state, with improving public service delivery and ensuring that government schemes reach beneficiaries among the main areas of discussion.
The conference began on September 13 at the Jorhat Convention Centre and is the first meeting of the state’s district commissioners since the new government was formed in May, according to an official release.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is chairing the conference, which is examining issues related to administration and development at the district level. The discussions are aimed at making governance more responsive to the needs of people and ensuring that the benefits of government programmes reach intended beneficiaries.
“Our DCs are at the forefront of delivering governance on the ground,” Sarma said in a post on X, highlighting the role of district commissioners in taking government decisions and development initiatives to the people.
The conference is taking up district-wise development priorities, resolution of public grievances and local needs, revenue administration, public amenities, infrastructure and law and order.
Officials are also reviewing the implementation of state and Central government schemes in different districts. The discussions are expected to focus on identifying gaps in delivery and improving coordination so that eligible beneficiaries receive the intended benefits.
Public grievances and the need for better access to government services are also part of the discussions, with district administrations expected to assess local issues and work towards quicker and more effective responses.
The meeting provides an opportunity for the government and district administrations to review development work across Assam and assess the implementation of key programmes at the grassroots level.
The conference comes days after a two-day meeting of senior police officials held in Golaghat on September 2 and 3. During that meeting, the SSP conference decided to establish an Anti-Narcotics Task Force as part of efforts to strengthen Assam’s response to the drug menace.
The district commissioners’ conference is expected to conclude with greater focus on coordinated administration, effective implementation of government schemes and improving the delivery of public services across the state.
