The State Election Commission (SEC) of Mizoram has announced that polling for 544 village councils (VCs) across nine districts and 111 local councils (LCs) in two urban local bodies will take place simultaneously on February 12. State Election Commissioner H Lalthlangliana shared details at a press conference, confirming that vote counting will commence at 7 PM or immediately after polling concludes on the same day. The last date for filing nominations is January 23, with January 27 set as the deadline for withdrawal of candidatures. Scrutiny of nomination papers will occur on January 24.
The SEC has mandated that the executive bodies be formed by February 14, and the election process will conclude by February 15. The elections cover 2,416 seats in VCs, of which 613 are reserved for women. In LCs under the Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) and Lunglei Municipal Council (LMC), 723 seats are up for grabs, with 195 reserved for women. This marks the first LC election in the LMC area since its establishment in 2023.
A total of 4,37,708 voters, including 2,22,098 women, are eligible to vote. However, voters in the Lai, Mara, and Chakma councils in Lawngtlai and Siaha districts are excluded as elections in these autonomous district council areas are conducted separately.
