Section 144 is imposed in Ganda Twisa to control protests

Four individuals have been arrested in connection with the aftermath of the tragic death of Parameswar Reang, a young boy who passed away while receiving treatment at GB Pant Hospital in Agartala. His death sparked widespread protests in the Ganda Twisa sub-division of Dhalai District.

According to Dhalai District Magistrate Saju Waheed, the situation escalated into a law and order issue following the boy’s demise. “Protesters set fire to several small establishments, resulting in the gutting of some shops,” Waheed told India Today NE. “Police and paramilitary forces have been deployed extensively to ensure control. The area has a diverse population, and we are vigilant to prevent any further escalation. Currently, the situation is completely under control.”

Waheed attributed the initial unrest to social media messages that allegedly incited the community. However, he clarified that apart from the initial protests, no additional incidents have been reported. “To preempt any deterioration, Section 144 has been imposed in Ganda Twisa,” he added. “Although minor disturbances occurred overnight, normalcy has been restored.”

Explaining the events leading to the tragic incident, Waheed stated, “On July 7th, a confrontation erupted between two groups at a local fair. This altercation escalated into a physical altercation, causing injuries to the boy, who succumbed to his injuries on Friday morning at GB Pant Hospital. Four suspects have been apprehended and are currently in judicial custody.”
