Security Alert: Centre Warns States of Potential Unrest Over Iran-Israel War

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has issued a high-level security advisory to all states and Union Territories, warning of potential communal tensions and sporadic violence following the sharp escalation of the Iran-Israel conflict. The directive, circulated on February 28, 2026, highlights concerns that recent military strikes by the U.S. and Israel—which reportedly resulted in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei—could have “ripple effects” across India’s diverse social fabric. Central intelligence agencies have flagged the risk of inflammatory rhetoric during religious gatherings and have specifically asked state police forces to monitor “pro-Iran radical preachers” whose sermons might incite unrest. The Centre’s move comes after spontaneous protests and mourning assemblies were reported in several regions, including Jammu and Kashmir, Lucknow, and parts of Delhi, where demonstrators expressed solidarity with Iran and condemned the joint military operations in West Asia.

States have been instructed to significantly augment security around sensitive locations, including the embassies and consulates of the United States, Israel, and Iran. The MHA has also emphasized the need for heightened vigilance at tourist hubs, Jewish community centers (Chabad Houses), and business establishments frequented by Westerners. Beyond physical security, the government has ordered an intensification of social media surveillance to curb the spread of misinformation that could further aggravate communal sentiments. Local authorities have been directed to engage with community leaders to maintain public tranquility and ensure that rapid-response teams are prepared for any untoward incidents. As India navigates this complex geopolitical crisis, the Ministry’s advisory underscores a proactive effort to prevent international flashpoints from disrupting internal stability and to safeguard the nearly nine million Indian expatriates whose safety remains a top priority for the administration.
