Security Forces Arrest Wanted TUNF Rebel near North Tripura Border

In a significant victory against militancy in North Tripura, local police have apprehended Lalthanga Reang, also known as Dhamanfa, a wanted militant associated with the banned group Tripura United National Front (TUNF). This operable arrest occurred in the Damchhara border area as part of an intelligence-led operation conducted by the North Tripura district police on Wednesday. Reang, who had previously escaped from prison, is implicated in various serious criminal activities, including murder and kidnapping, and is specifically linked to a conspiracy related to Independence Day events on August 14.

Ashish Kumar Thakur, the Sub-Divisional Police Officer for Kanchanpur, reported that this arrest is a crucial step in a broader campaign against extremist factions within the region. The operation was a collaborative effort by the Anandapur Sub-Division and the Tripura Police, marking it as a notable achievement in combating militant threats. The police stated that the arrested militant played a crucial role in orchestrating plans to target government institutions, assault police officers, and seize police firearms—a conspiracy that underscores the persistent dangers posed by such extremist groups in the area.
